Caught In Their Web

One of my ultimate weaknesses and guiltiest pleasures. Nothing gets me like a good comic.

Comics have come a crazy long way. A trip to the comic book store is now something of an adventure. Or at least more than it was before, when you were a kid. Because going to the comic book store now is simply for the pleasure of having the fresh comic book in your hand. And don't get me wrong, I love me some classic comic books. But we also have apps for that, now- and with that technology, we have comics at our fingertips.

I remember the first time I downloaded a Wonder Woman comic onto my phone, I screamed. But I have screamed even more since discovering web line comics. For those of you that don't know, line comics are comics you read in a scrolling format [think scrolling through social media] instead of a swiping format [think flipping a page]. Webcomic apps have been around for a while, but I only discovered them about four years ago. And let me just say, my life has been changed forever- Well, in an addiction sort of way, but I trust you have more self control than me so we will carry on.

As you might have guessed the app I use and recommend is called Webtoon. All of the pictures in my graphic above are featured comics on the app that I have read and enjoyed. I wanted to show a little bit of what they have to offer because the genre and art spectrum is actually pretty wild. One of the things I enjoy most about this type of platform for comics is that anyone can publish a comic. And when I say anyone, I mean anyone. I love that. I love that people can not only have an outlet for their art, that is easily accessible to an audience, AND has the opportunity to generate income for the artist. Hands down, if I could draw, I would do it. In fact, James [my husband] and I have our own account in case we ever get around to it. But I digress. There is opportunity there for artists, writers, and even musicians.

This platform allows for music to be paired with the comic and timed so it plays to your reading experience. That was how I first got drawn in. I saw an ad for one of their top comics, Siren's Lament, and that the comic featured music. That concept completely astounded me and I fell in love immediately. There is nothing like good art with a good score, hence my love for anime as well. It is captivating and leads me down so many adventures. On the home page of my blog you will see I have a monthly recommended read. Now, it won't always be a comic but this month it is, and to be honest, most months, I can't say it won't be. I simply cannot get enough. I love supporting artists, supporting people following their dreams, and on top of that they are so stinking good.

All this to say, if you like comic books but don't have the time or the money, maybe give webcomics a try. You can read them everywhere, you can support people like you and me, and you can have an addiction that is more socially acceptable than heroin. You're welcome.

Thank you for joining me tonight on my rant on webcomics. Happy hump day, finish your week strong, and stay tuned for more fun stuff later this week. Stay messy my friends.
