Home Sweet Home

It's been a minute since we've covered something on Webtoon and this week we get hit with a doozy!

Though I don't venture into the thriller and horror genres often, sometimes something will catch my eye, and frankly my curiosity needs to be satiated. A little over a year ago, that is exactly what happened for me as I watched Sweet Home rise through the ranks on the Webtoon top series and genre charts. I read a few episodes and was thoroughly impressed with the amount of suspense and horror I found myself with. Seriously, I jumped a couple times.

Sadly, I didn't end up continuing with it because I was following quite a few comics at that time, and a few fell by the wayside. I have to say I deeply regret allowing that to happen to Sweet Home for a few reasons. Namely, because it is completed now so I will have to pay (literally) for my crimes in order to read it. But also because of the reason we are talking about today- Sweet Home is getting a Netflix live action television series!

Not only is it getting a tv series, but it looks GOOD. I loved everything about the trailer and have no hesitations that this will be an incredible series. Speaking of the series, what's it about? Great question, peanut gallery.

After an unexpected family tragedy, a reclusive high school student is forced to leave his home -- only to face something much scarier: a reality where monsters are trying to wipe out humanity. Now he must fight alongside a handful of reluctant heroes to try and save the world before it’s too late. Now a Netflix Original Series. -Webtoon

That is the story synopsis found on Webtoon and with the show coming out THIS FRIDAY, I don't want to spoil anything. That's right, I am bringing you this news with minimal time to prepare- the first season of Sweet Home drops this Friday, December 18th. But I'm not the only one making this announcement last minute. The trailer announcing the adaptation only dropped 3 weeks ago. Though fans could have known sooner if they were following Korean news. The first episode aired for them on June 3rd and the season completed on August 2nd, just before the comic reached its conclusion on September 29th with its 140th episode. That's a pretty quick timeline, especially when you fast forward just a couple months to now where we will finally be getting season 1 for ourselves!

Sweet Home was written by Youngchan Hwang and illustrated by Carnby Kim, who must be feeling something surreal watching their creation come to life on the TV screen. A huge congratulations to them is in order for creating something completely worthwhile and wildly successful. Sweet Home remained at the top of their genre for almost their entire serialization and has a 9.85 star rating on Webtoon, as well as 2.1 million subscribers. Now, not only that, but it looks like the live action is trending to keep up those positive ratings. The webcomic was originally given the genres of thriller and horror but the show is being labelled thriller and drama, which just intrigues me further, because as we all know, different genres have different rules.

Though 2020 has been a bust in almost every category of life, I think it is safe to say that it has been an incredible year for adaptations, and this will just further prove that point. I am very excited to get to watch this suspenseful creation come to life and hope that you will join me for a unique adventure that just might give you a refreshing scare!

Thank you so much for joining me for this installment of Nerdom! The holidays are fast approaching, I hope you are all safe and well! I will be back this Sunday for The Mess and I hope to see you there! In the meantime, stay nerdy, stay messy, and stay safe otaku!
