My Season Finale

It feels like we only just started our My Hero Academia 2021 coverage doesn't it? After all we haven't shut up about it. But just like that, it's over. Now we have to talk about it some more!

We did it! We made it to the end of My Hero Academia [MHA] season five! Which is huge for us here at My Mess considering we were doing in-depth coverage of MHA since the fifth season began. Outside of doing our Season Premier, Mid-Season, and now our Season Finale reviews like normal, James and I did weekly deep dives on Rantt where we discussed Saturday episodes of the anime and Sunday chapter drops for the manga. It has been a wild ride for MHA fans this year and now we have break to sort out some of our feelings.

Warning: If you have NOT read my Mid-Season review, please do so now as I will be piggy backing off of that. Once again this is a spoiler free zone and I will not be discussing current manga chapters, just the second half of the anime's fifth season. Get it? Got it? Good. Let's roll!

Season five remained consistent in only one really notable way for me and that is the fact that it was inconsistent. To the manga at least. I have talked a lot about how Bones Studio has done an INCREDIBLE job at staying true to Kohei Horikoshi's original story. And they have...in seasons one through three...in season four they had a couple moments that turned heads, but nothing outrageous or even anything to necessarily worry about, and then season five came. I'm not sure what the logic was in the creation of this season. MHA has become one of the most successful animes in the world and that was all by sticking to the original creators story, why Bones thought they needed to make as many changes as they did baffles me to no end and leaves me more than worried for the season's to come solely based on the implications. The implications haunt me people.

If we want to look at the positive side of things, the art remained incredible this season, and the fight scenes contained in the [dizzyingly shortened] My Villian Academia arc were phenomenal. However, plummeting right back down to the negative, I actually don't think we will see season five at this years anime awards, which would be a first for the series I believe. At best Shigaraki might save the show with a nomination for Best Villian, but I wouldn't place any bets on it.

To be fair, this was a transitional season. Without going into spoilers, this season needed to be a little slower than past seasons because it is building up to the next arc, which will be starting in season six. Speaking of, for anyone that was worried by the slow down of season five, season six HAS indeed already been green lit and a very short teaser has already been released for it. There is no confirmed date, BUT it is safe to assume that we are looking at a similar timeline as season's one, two, three, and five and can expect it next spring [2022], likely around March or April.

In the meantime, fans can satisfy their cravings by following the manga's weekly chapter updates, checking out the movie that comes out at the end of October, and praying that Bones decides to throw us a bone and give us some OVA's like the past couple seasons. I don't think this is outside the realm of possibilities either and expect that if they do decide to air some OVA's we will probably be given a heads up, so make sure you are checking up on anime news.

Overall, I wasn't entirely satisfied with season five but I was happy to see some of Horikoshi's more brilliant scenes from this arc finally animated. Regardless of my feelings towards Studio Bones right now, I am looking forward to the movie as well as season six. Until then, let's all go beyond, PLUS ULTRA!

Thank you so much for tuning in to this slamming installment of Nerdom. I am currently sick as I write this, so I hope you all are feeling extra healthy for me! I hope you have a wonderful rest of your week, finish strong, and I will see you on Sunday for Rantt and The Mess. In the mean time, stay safe, stay nerdy and stay messy otaku!

P.S. the second half show opener can suck my d*ck. Sorry that was aggressive. I didn't mean it. Yes I did.
