SheRan Through My Heart

Don't shame me on that title okay? There was no way it wouldn't be some bad pun so get over it. SheRAN through my heart, that's gold.

We did it. James and I took the plunge and watched all of SheRa and the Princesses of Power. And honestly? We loved it.

Short intro but what else is there to say? This might be blasphemous in most circles but SheRa had me feeling similarly to Avatar: The Last Airbender. Before you persecute me let me clarify that I am NOT saying it is on the same level, but if I had to categorize it, that is where I would put it. This was some quality animation with all the feels. The character spread was diverse and the writing, though cheesy at times, kept us coming back for more. James and I have actually not geeked out on a show this way in a long time [I type while sitting at my desk in my new SheRa hoodie]. I think that is the best argument I can make about this being a good series- that JAMES geeked out to it. If you don't want to listen to my rec, at least take his word for it.

For those of you that don't know anything about the series, let's break this down a bit. SheRa and The Princesses of Power is technically a reboot of sorts that came out in 2018 and ran to completion in 2020. It was rebooted off the original series SheRa: Princess of Power that came out in 1985, which was set in the Masters of the Universe... universe. If that makes sense. HOWEVER, this adaptation does not include He-Man, which is honestly fine. Since I have not watched the original She-Ra since the 90's let's ignore that timeline for the time being and talk about our new Princesses of Power.

In this story, we start with a teenage Adora who believes she has been training her whole life to fight the greatest threat to Etheria- the evil Princesses. This war is simple, the Horde are the good guys and the Princesses are the bad guys. It's black and white, clean and simple. But after a joyride gone wrong with her childhood best friend and rival, Catra, she finds that there might be some gray area she hadn't considered. Uncovering the horrible truth that her whole life has been a lie, Adora runs away and joins the Rebellion and helps the Princesses fight off the Horde as SheRa, the Princess of Power. Feeling betrayed Catra makes it her mission to destroy everything that stands in her way, even Adora and the world itself if necessary. This show is five seasons of self-discovery, friendship, and battling the fine line between love and hate.

And it didn't go unnoticed either. The show received critical acclaim and score high on all review platforms. Not only that but from 2019 to THIS YEAR, even though it completed in 2020, it has received 13 nominations for awards and has walked away with two wins under their belt (not to mention one award still to be announced this year). Trust me this show deserved all the recognition it got, and probably even deserved more.

Without any spoilers this show did a wonderful job including a diverse cast, providing us with LGBTQ+ representation throughout the series. The writer did speak out about the push back she received while trying to write the main couple which is why we don't see anything come to fruition with them until the last season but their themes are consistent, and was still a powerful and positive representation with the rest of the cast. I felt emotional watching it unfold so boldly in comparison to other series since it is so difficult to for the alphabet mafia to have any sort of representation, let alone POSITIVE representation in entertainment and media. I know they are not the first to do so but every time I see it, specifically see it done well, I find a little more hope in the world.

This show was beautifully done. I genuinely enjoyed it so much, James loved it, and I could see us watching it again (re-watchability is important to note people). If you are as behind the times as we are and have not seen it yet, I highly encourage you check it out, the entire series is available on Netflix for you to watch and enjoy as much as we did. With that being said, go forward my prince and princesses, for the honor of Grayskull!

Oh and if anyone finds a SheRa Pop, let me know.

Thank you for joining me for this fun review on our spunky heroine. I hope you are having a fabulous week, let's finish strong and get to the weekend okay? We will be back on Sunday with Rantt and The Mess. In the meantime though, stay safe, stay nerdy, and stay messy otaku!
