You Watched Kakegurui? Interesting...

Yeah, I did. It's mildly embarrassing to say so.... I'm gonna say even more.

I did it. I watched all of Kakegurui. The show known for being alllll about the fan service. Which is kinda an understatement, so much so that when James first walked in to me watched it he asked if I was watching hentai... Yeah, that anime. And after watching it, I have to say... it wasn't what I expected.
I had heard a lot about the show, after all its been out since 2017, and the manga has been out since 2014. But it was the fact that people were STILL talking about it that made me finally cave and check it out. Plus we are actually at the appropriate length of time to find out if the show will be being greenlit for a third season. Incidentally, I was actually looking for something brainless to watch in English recently and landed on this. Perfect timing for me. Turns out though, that brainless wasn't exactly what I got. If you want to jump straight to the punch, I actually kind of liked the show. It was definitely unnecessarily over sexualized, but the concept was just so dangerously fun.

Kakegurui is about a teenage girl named Yumeko Jabami who transfers to a school where the children of the rich and powerful learn to become future leaders through the art of gambling (terrifying). Turns out, her transfer there might not have been chance though, because she is a compulsive gambler and she's on a winning streak. Put her and the strict cutthroat hierarchy of the school together and you get all out chaos. As the schools norms begin to deteriorate and the status quo begins to break, all the highest players show up to get things under control. The question is, can any of them actually beat this wild card? Because somehow, even when she loses...she wins.
There are two seasons to the show, the first season completing in 2017 and the second season completing in 2019. If we were to stick to that pattern and factor in the rumored Covid delays for the show, we should be finding out information about season three soon. And we need to because frankly the ending of season two wasn't very satisfactory with two whole chunks of the story line left unresolved. Despite that though, it was an enjoyable show. I by no means support the gambling of this show (as the stakes can/have consisted of peoples lives just as much as money) but knowing its fiction makes it a bit thrilling to watch. Something I very much enjoyed about the first season was figuring out the cheats in every episode. Though this shows genre is labelled shonen, I feel like thriller and mystery are better suited for it. So don't just this book by its genre cover.
Overall, if you are wanting a show simply for entertainment and not necessarily sustenance (and you don't mind obnoxious fan service) this is the show for you. I am hoping to see a season three, and am debating starting the manga as well. Overall overall, not to shabby for a try at brainless. Maybe I should try that more often.
Thank you for joining me for this embarrassing review/confessional of Kakegurui. What is one of YOUR guilty pleasure shows? Let me know. I hope you have a wonderful rest of your week. We will be back Sunday with Rantt and The Mess. I hope to see you there! In the meantime, stay safe, stay nerdy, and stay messy otaku.
