Hear My Roar

In an age of remakes, there have been plenty we don't need or want. Today's topic is about one that is desperately needed and wanted- Eragon.

This gets my adrenaline pumping. First, we got a reboot of Fruits Basket, which ended up incredible, then we got the announcement of the Percy Jackson and The Olympian's reboot (which is still in the works but still), and now we get word of Eragon being up for review by Disney+! This would genuinely be a nerd dream come true. Nay, this would be justice served!

If you don't know what I'm talking about, this situation is actually eerily similar to the Percy Jackson series adaptation fiasco, which we have covered here before. Honestly, it's the same problem that most YA [Young Adult-genre] series' experience: the books are a hit, so Hollywood makes a movie adaptation, and it blows. A complete flop- doesn't follow the books, fans get angry, the movie franchise tanks and its abandoned, left unfinished. Eragon's adaptation however, is one of the worst we have ever seen. So much so that I don't have a single positive thing to say about the movie...let's just get to the books.

Eragon is the first book in Christopher Paolini's Inheritance Cycle series. You might recognize it from us before, because it was our Pick of the Month here on My Mess back in June 2020. This series takes place in another world, one filled with magic, both dark and light, and many fantastical mythical races and creatures- including but not limited to, dragons. And with dragons there are dragon riders! Human's and elves magically bonded to dragons, and living as one with them. Dragon riders are powerful and revered...and they are also extinct. That's right, when Eragon picks up, the age of the dragons and their riders is almost long gone. All killed in a great war and only one dragon and rider remain, the current king of the human world, a dictator, who has done nothing but hurt his people. That is until one fateful day when a certain boy, finds a certain stone, that isn't a stone at all...but an egg. From there you are plunged head first into a heart wrenching adventure full of hard lessons and even harder decisions.

This story is not one that will lead you to a mindless happy ending, but takes you through the grueling process of war. The lead to the fall, the war itself, and what one is supposed to do in the aftermath of such destruction. It takes you through what it means to do what is right and how far away that path is from the path that is easy. It shows what true leadership is, as wel as true sacrifice, honor, and bravery. Why this series was limited to the YA genre is beyond me, because it is chalked full of politics and difficult topics. But it is because of those reasons why a proper remake- as a show preferably and not a movie- is so important. This has been on my wish list for a long time and I hope so much that we can see it receive the remake it deserves.

If you have not experienced this series, I highly, highly recommend you check it out. It is a household staple of ours and you can bet your butts I'm about to reread it- again. Get out there, experience Alagaesia for yourself, and then let them hear your roar!

Thank you so much for tuning in to this exciting news today here on Nerdom! I am so, so excited for this and hope Disney takes up the mantel. I will let this fuel me as I make my way through the rest of my week. Let's finish strong together! I will be back on Sunday with The Mess and Rantt, I hope to see you there! In the meantime stay safe, stay nerdy, and stay messy otaku.
